F.A.Q
General/ Technical
In this section, several questions about the eBook concept, E Ink technology and the Cybook features are answered. If you have any further questions that have not been answered here, please contact us at support@bookeen.gr.
Touching, feeling and looking at the paper of a book are true physical pleasures. The Cybook does not try to replace it, but brings new features to the reading experience: immediate access to thousands of documents, adaptation of the reading environment (size, font type) for optimal comfort and a huge storage capacity which allows you to carry your whole library with you.
The Cybook screen is viewable under a wide range of lighting conditions, including direct sunlight and possesses a high-contrast paper-like appearance. Like a sheet of paper, it can be viewed from nearly any angle, doesn't show any flicker effect and has a high resolution. When you read, you have no eyestrain and it definitely gives you the experience of reading from paper.
No. The Cybook screen is not backlit and therefore it does not strain the eyes. Like a normal sheet of paper, the Cybook E Ink® screen needs sufficient environmental light. Cybook is thus readable in full sunlight, which is not the case for almost all standard LCD displays.
You can store your books either in the internal memory of the Cybook or in an extra optional memory card. The internal storage capacity is 1GB (Gigabyte), enough for 1000 standard books in ePub, Pdf, HTML or Text format. You can also increase your storage capacity by using an optional memory card.
Yes. You just have to plug the Cybook USB cable into your computer (PC, Mac, etc.). The Cybook is seen as an external hard drive. You can thus transfer your files easily.
No, additional software or programs cannot be installed on the Cybook.
Generally, no. The Cybook is not a PDA or a computer and therefore you cannot synchronize your calendar or your contacts. Nevertheless, some programs allow you to synchronize the books you bought from several online sources or the RSS feeds you subscribe to with your device.
The Cybook GEN3 Gold edition supports MP3 (with no DRM) for music and audio books. You can even listen to your favorite music as you read an eBook. The Cybook Opus does not support any music formats.
Nothing. Your data has been stored in the internal memory of your device or on your SD card. You just can't use your Cybook anymore until it is recharged.
No. There is no touchscreen or stylus on the Cybook. You control the device with its buttons.
The Cybook Opus weighs only 150 grams (5.3 ounces) and is the lightest device on the market. The Cybook GEN3 Gold edition is still very light, only 173 grams (6.13 ounces), battery included. For comparison, a standard paperback weighs 317grams (11.2 ounces), while a 3.5 inch screen smartphone weighs 135 grams (4.8 ounces).
No. The Cybook USB only functions in slave mode. The Cybook must be used with a USB Host (a computer for instance).
There is full Greek language support. Documents in other languages with a limited set of characters, such as Cyrillic, can be read in all formats. The Cybook contains default fonts which can decode all these files. Please note that for text files, you will still have to set local information which specifies the language encoding of the document.
For documents with an extended set of characters like Chinese, you will need to install your own font on the Cybook to decode your documents (except for PDF files, where the required fonts are embedded most of the times). Please check "How to install a new font on the Cybook?
Right to left languages such as Hebrew and Arabic will only be available in PDF format.
Connect your Cybook to your computer via the USB cable. Drag and drop (copy) your TrueType font file in the "Font" folder of the Cybook internal memory. You will then be able to choose it in the "Font Family" submenu. In case you need Greek Polytonic fonts and they are not already installed in your device, you can download them from the Greek Font Society webpage ( www.greekfontsociety.gr). We suggest the use of GFS Didot.
Yes. Several books in different formats can be read at the same time, and you can switch from one to another very easily.
Many professional books (Health, Law, Technology…) are available in Mobipocket format. Technical specifications are available in PDF format which is supported by the Cybook.
Yes. Thanks to its abilities to increase the font size or to change the font family, visually impaired persons can comfortably read again.
How many books and magazines can you put in your travel bag? How many books did you decide to leave behind because of the weight? Once you arrive at your destination, what do you do when you reach the last page of your last book?
If you have your Cybook on you, you will be able to carry with you all the books you want or download them instantly.
There are many free eBook files available on the Internet, like most of the classical literature. Τhe Cybook will be able to read these documents, since it supports the most popular formats.
Online electronic book stores also offer commercial books, in prices between 20% and 40% lower than the equivalent paper versions. Those books are generally protected by a Digital Right Management (DRM) system. The Cybook supports both PDF and ePub files with DRM.
You can find many sites which offer classic titles in eBook format. Before downloading any files, check that they are in an appropriate format: HTML, TXT, PDF or ePub. Keep in mind that the ePub format is gradually becoming the most popular option. Here are two of the most well-known sites:
www.gutenberg.org
www.feedbooks.com
Cybook supports ePub and PDF files protected by the AdobeTM encryption system. This protection allows the Cybook customer to access more than 200,000 contemporary copyrighted titles. Most of the top publishers provide their books with Adobe DRM: Random House, Penguin, Simon & Schuster or Harlequin. The first step to downloading Adobe protected content is to download and install Adobe Digital Editions.
Note: you can switch your DRM support to Mobipocket via an alternative firmware, available on our site. To download books for Mobipocket, just go to www.mobipocket.com and install Mobipocket Desktop Reader. For legal reasons Mobipocket DRM and Adobe DRM cannot co-exist in the same device.
